Statement on Bondi terror attack

Statement on Bondi terror attack

Queensland Churches Together (QCT) stands in solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community, horrified at the terror attack in Bondi last night that targeted a peaceful, family-focused celebration of Chanukah.

While many Christians were singing carols in churches around Australia, many others – people of both faith and no faith – may have been looking forward to an evening out at Sydney’s Carols in the Domain next weekend.

The Jewish community has precisely the same human right to celebrate a religious holiday, in public or private, without interference.

Both Chanukah and Christmas celebrate the miracle of God’s care and provision for people. They are joyful holidays, about receiving light and love in unexpected places. They encourage, bring hope, and inspire generosity.

The vicious terror attack on people in Bondi could not be more different. There is no place for such violence; it can have no justification.

QCT stands with the Jewish community – and with everyone impacted by this act of inhumanity – mourning the death of innocent people, offering profound condolences to their families and friends, and thanking all who responded to this attack in good faith by caring for other people.

And we pray that all Australians will take real and effective steps towards ending hatred.
