General Secretary: Dr Kate Power (from June 2025)
Dr Kate Power comes to the role of General Secretary with a PhD in religious communication, a Masters in Christian Studies, and a deep interest in helping to build receptive ecumenism across Queensland’s faith communities by supporting knowledge-sharing, relationship-building, and collaboration on matters of shared concern.
Kate has worshipped and worked with diverse Christian traditions over many years. Born in country NSW, she was raised in Sydney and helped support immigrant and refugee communities as a Community Consultant with the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.
Kate then spent 20 years in Canada, first as a theological student at the transdenominational Regent College and, later, as Registrar at Alliance University College - Nazarene University College. Kate also lived in Claresholm (population 3,500), which provided the setting for her PhD research, before taking up a lecturer position at the University of British Columbia.
In 2018, Kate joined The University of Queensland, where she has served as an award-winning lecturer and researcher. Her academic expertise involves critically evaluating how people and organisations use language to communicate about themselves and shape the world around them. As a researcher, Kate has consistently sought to promote justice, equity, and the common good, with publications addressing issues such as news reporting on gender-based violence, power in religious institutions, COVID-19 crisis communication, and politeness in politics. Most recently, Kate has collaborated with Australia’s arts and culture sector to develop the "Creating Out Loud" peer coaching program, described in her 2024 TEDx talk, which builds networks of mutual support for artists and arts workers.
An avid dog lover and film buff, Kate lives in leafy Chapel Hill with her husband, Jared, their young adult daughter, dog, and three chickens.
