General Secretary: Reverend David Baker
David comes to the role of General Secretary as a result of a long exposure to the ecumenical movement. Being raised in rural Queensland methodism, the formation of the Uniting Church, exploration of different traditions and expressions of church as a young man, ministry formation in the ecumenical Queensland College of Theology, all these shaped in him an assumption that an ecumenical mindset is “normal” for church leadership. He treasures his time at QCT, where he sat under ecumenical leaders such as Fr. Michael Putney, and attended the 7th Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Canberra.
As an ordained minister of the UCA in various roles, congregational minister, church planter, presbytery minister, and moderator, he has always worked towards deeper ecumenical engagement.
He was a co-founder of the Queensland Community Alliance – an organisation that brings together faith groups, community groups, and unions to listen to what’s happening in our communities and empower people to respond.
He is founding chair of Christian Religious Instruction Alliance, an organisation of some 14 denominations that oversee RI in State Schools. .
David worked as a property valuer in rural and regional Queensland before completing theological training and ordination in 1991.
David holds a Diploma in Business Management from Queensland Agricultural College, a Bachelor of Theology from Brisbane College of Theology, and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
He is married to Dr. Joan Baker, and they have three adult children.
